Your First Dog Wash at Peaks Family Pets: Squamish’s Newest Dog Baths

We moved to our new location two months ago and thought it would be nice to write about our new dog baths. Since the new dog baths have opened, we have learnt a couple things.

Baths are Stocked: While we encourage you to bring your dog’s favorite treats and any special shampoos or conditioners, you don’t need to fret about forgetting anything. Our private dog baths are fully equipped with everything you’ll require, from gentle shampoos and conditioners to towels and dryers. The only thing you may need is your favourite grooming brush. It’s a good idea to brush your dog prior to the washing your dog so it loosens up dirt and mattes.

Go at your own pace: We encourage you to invest time introducing your dog to our pet wash area. Your first visit doesn’t have to be “okay let’s get in and get washing”. You can just let your dog explore and sniff the baths. It is a new experience let them have treats in the baths. See if they will explore going up the stairs on their own. Let them sit in the baths and just chill and get used to tub. Sniffing around can help them feel more comfortable and relaxed. Remember, there’s no rush! We desire bath time to be a positive experience for both of you. Next step would be to run the water, let your pup see what to expect. If you find that your pup us to nervous then that can be it. Come back again and try more the next time.

Shampoos for All: We have loaded our baths with all sorts of shampoos and conditioners for every type of fur and level of grim. Most Squamish dog owners have had the unpleasant experience of the salmon dog roll. Don’t worry we have a perfect shampoo for that. Earth Bath Dirty Dog Shampoo is a gentle shampoo that contains sweet orange oil, which has long been recognized as an effective deodorizer, degreaser, and fur stain remover. Dog has sensitive skin? No worries we have non-scented hypoallergenic shampoos for your pooch. Owners with dogs that have a white coast will love the Coat Brightening shampoo which has coat brighteners that adds an extra sparkle and brilliance to coats. If you just want your dog to smell good we got your covered there too. Lots of fruity options as well a lavender scented shampoo.

The more the merrier: While enjoying your dog’s bath, take a moment to interact with our friendly staff. This can help your dog feel more comfortable in new environments. Bring your family too. The dog baths all have a private fenced in space and I think we have a had a small family all fit into one. So there’s lot of room to make bath time a family affair.

The blowers: our dog dryers are ridiculously efficient. When you first use them, we highly recommend testing them our first, so you know how to use them. Start with the lowest blow setting and then when your dog is comfortable with the drying turn then turn it up. We love these dryers they get the dogs dry fast and are professional grade. If prefer not to use the dryer that is okay too, we have loads of dog towels for you to use. Feel free to use as many as you need.

Tips for a Stress-Free Bath:

  • Start at the Butt: Many dogs find the water and bathing process less stressful when they are gradually introduced to it. Starting from the tail allows for a gentler approach. Also, starting at the tail enables you to work your way up the body, minimizing the amount of shampoo that runs into your dog’s face and eyes. This helps to prevent irritation.
  • Treats, treats and more treats: Reward your dog with treats and praise throughout the bath to create a positive association.
  • Talk it out: Speak softly and use gentle strokes to calm your dog.
  • Embrace patience: First-time bathers might require extra time and patience. If your dog is afraid of the tub, take your time, use treats, and let them approach on their own terms. Lots of praise when they do get in!
  • Utilize the Happy Hoodie: If your dog is afraid of the dryer, consider using a Happy Hoodie to reduce noise and anxiety during the drying process.

If your dog is particularly anxious or reactive around other dogs, we understand. Peaks Family Pets offers private, after-hours bath times. We believe that every dog deserves a stress-free bath, and we’re committed to working with you to create a positive experience for your furry friend. Your dog’s well-being is our top priority.

At Peaks Family Pets, we believe bath time should be a joyful and enriching experience for both you and your furry companion.
